Utilita Manifesta - Fight Poverty Competition

We have just been anounced as one of ten finalists in the Utilita Manifesta Fight Poverty design competition. The competition requested Graphic Design Posters and Industrial Design objects that drew attention to the subject of social, cultural and material sustainability.

The entry that was submitted is a new object for ethical manufacturer Bodj that will be launched in 2011. Bodj work with villages in Cambodia to produce Baskets, Tiles and Ironworks that are then distributed through their parent company, a wood burning stove manufacturer.

Fat Lip is a log basket that uses the entire rim of the basket as the handle, so it can be picked up from any position. Hand woven rattan is worked around a light, coloured steel frame with the design being stackable for economic shipping. The modest design royalties from the project will be directed back to the local villagers and apprentices who make Fat Lip to pay for childrens' educational materials and give extra financial assistance where needed.

More on this project in the New Year.
